Building a support network from scratch
Friendships abroad rarely happen by accident. Small, repeated steps make all the difference.

Back home, your network grew without you noticing: school, family, neighbours. In a new country you have to build it on purpose, and that can feel awkward.
Start small and repeat
Friendship grows from repeated, low-pressure contact. Join something that meets weekly (a sports club, a choir, a volunteer group) rather than one-off events.
Mix your circles
A few friends from your own community give comfort and understanding; local friends help you feel at home in the new culture. You need both.
Ask for help
Asking a neighbour for a small favour is one of the fastest ways to build a connection. People like to be useful.
