Language anxiety: why speaking up feels so hard, and what helps
You know the words, but they disappear the moment someone is waiting for your answer. Here is what is happening, and how to ease it.

Language anxiety is not a lack of intelligence or effort. It is your nervous system treating a conversation as a threat: the fear of being judged takes up the space your vocabulary needs.
What helps
- Lower the stakes: practise in low-pressure places first, like a café, a library or a language café
- Prepare two or three go-to phrases for when you get stuck
- Breathe out slowly before you speak; a long exhale calms the body
- Celebrate communication, not perfection
Most people around you care far less about your mistakes than you think. Each conversation you finish, however clumsy, teaches your brain that it is safe.
